Headshaking syndrome

What is the Headshaking syndrome?
 

Headshaking syndrome presents as a tendency of the horse to shake his head when mounted, obsessively, intermittently and apparently involuntarily, in particular after warming up.

The causes can be various, including respiratory, hormonal or neurological disorders, back pain, teeth problems, bridle pressure, allergic rhinitis or trigeminal nerve pain. Triggers can be various, commonly bright sunlight, pollen or insects, resulting in seasonal discomfort and anxiety in the head.

The symptoms are:
 

  • Turning and shaking the head when the horse is mounted and for no apparent reason.
  • The horse rubs his nose frequently.
