Hoof problems? Strategies for a healthy and strong hooves
Lundi 26 Novembre 2018HOOVES: Strategies for a healthy and strong hooves
The hoof is the extension of the superficial layer of the skin. Being a living structure, the hoof needs frequent care to keep it healthy and strong.
A balanced diet is important, providing nutrients to promote the good condition of the hoof, as well as good hygiene is fundamental for its conservation. A cleaning before and after each activity allows us to remove dirt and observe anomalies.
We must also take into account the hydration, elasticity and protection of the hoof that can be altered by the weather, type of soil, the time spent in the stable...
The good condition of the hooves will provide us a comfortable and safe animal, willing to do the work we do and enjoy the time spent together.

Better to prevent than to cure is a motto that we must keep in mind when we talk about hooves. And, although is commonly known that horses can have a genetic tendency for hoof condition, a good handling and care have a great influence on good hoof development.
Is important to note that good nutrition combined with the right supplementation is key to ensuring a good hoof quality. An interesting question that we must ask ourselves when deciding which supplementation we should administer to the horse is: which are the most important nutrients for a quality supplementation for the hooves?
- BIOTIN:
Recent research shows that daily biotin intake improves hoof quality – a fact that many farriers, veterinarians and owners are aware of. However, a supplement based only on biotin does not ensure this improvement, since biotin works together with the aminoacid methionine; one does not work without the other.
Biotin is a natural substance for growth, the central importance of which is based on the maintenance of health, charge and elasticity of the substance of the hoof. On the one hand, strengthens the structure of the hoof and prevents fractures in the hoof wall, brittle edges, too soft frog and too low heel. On the other hand, improves the union between the hoof layer and the lower skin, preventing the creation of a weak or hollow hoof wall.

- SULFUR:
Sulfur is of prime importance to the hoof. The smell we associate with hot horseshoes is essentially burnt sulfur. As in the case of biotin, its availability is essential. Biotin contains sulfur, like garlic, but not in sufficient amounts to improve the hoof condition, and pure sulfur is not usable for the horse. One of the best forms of bioavailable sulfur is through Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane (MSM).
- CALCIUM:
The function of calcium affects the quality of the hoof. Increasingly, studies show that calcium is one of the most important components in the treatment of white line diseases. However, calcium cannot work without phosphorus, so it is very important that the diet contains both elements and that they are well balanced.
- ZINC:
Zinc, in the form of zinc sulfate, is another element associated with hoof health. Its role is in the hoof formation and hardening, and in the condition of the skin and coat.
- A VITAMIN:
This vitamin is necessary for a healthy skin and for hoof formation. Although pastures provide enough amounts for the animals, it is one of the most unstable vitamins and one that is lost most quickly in prepared feed or preserved forage. For this reason, good supplementation is important, particularly where access to fresh grass is limited.

TREATMENT FOR HOOVES
BASIC DAILY HOOF MAINTENANCE

BIOTIN PLUS – 50gr/day | HOOF MOIST – Moisturizing cream
Daily hoof care is essential to ensure overall health and to prevent future problems. The ideal treatment is carried out both orally, with a complete biotin (biotin, MSM, methionine, zinc and calcium), and topically, with a moisturizing cream – PRO FEET HOOF MOIST.
INITIAL PHASE OF THE PROBLEM

PRO FEET 5 STAR | HOOF DRESSING – Regenerating ointment
In cases of cracked, dry, splinted hooves... we must opt for a more concentrated supplementation that acts on the problem.
PRO FEET 5 STAR is a nutritional support that helps a healthy growth of the hoof and protection against cracks. Provides antioxidants that promote detoxification of the liver and the body in general, reflected in a healthy and shiny coat, hair and hooves. Also in liquid and in pellets!
HOOF DRESSING is a regenerating ointment enriched with essential eucalyptus extracts, especially for hoof injuries.
INJURY TREATMENT

MSM HOOF – 14gr/day | HOOF DRESSING – Regenerating ointment
If we are dealing with the case of serious injuries, shock treatment is necessary. We recommend a nutritional supplement with high concentrations that slow the progression of the problem and help the horse to recover.
MSM HOOF contains highly concentrated ingredients, such as MSM, Zinc and A vitamin, creating an extraordinary speed of growth and recovery of the hoof. A minimum treatment of six months is recommended.

Time is a challenging factor in improving and healing hooves. By supplying the appropriate supplementation we ensure healthy hooves and prevent future problems. We must keep in mind that recovery is a slow process that requires at least six months to see a noticeable improvement.
