The health of the respiratory system in spring and summer
Friday 15 May 2020THE HEALTH OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM IN SPRING AND SUMMER
As riders, most of us are familiar with the respiratory problems that our horses experience during the winter months. But now that summer is approaching, should we pay attention to our horse's breathing? Absolutely yes!
It is not just about dust; the summer season also brings other problems to the respiratory system. In summer pastures, respiratory complications are often associated with pollen. In late spring, summer, and early autumn, different plants, such as rapeseed crops, grass, or weeds, also pose a challenge for the respiratory tract.

Which are the respiratory stress symptoms?
They are very similar to the symptoms that we can observe during the winter season. The most common are:
- Heavy breathing.
- Runny nose.
- Cough.
What can we do?
- First of all, we should, if possible, recognize what is causing the horse's respiratory distress and try to move it away. It could be as simple as moving the horse out of the paddock, moving him away from the trees or crops during the most critical periods, or even putting a mask on him.
- If the weather is very hot, try to exercise your horse at the coolest times of the day, such as morning and evening, as studies show that high temperatures aggravate respiratory problems in horses.
- Control the ideal weight of your horse.

How can we strengthen the airways through nutrition?
It is important to maintain good respiratory health through nutritional products that contain:
- Powerful antioxidants like cranberries and rosehips for healthy respiratory function. There is research showing that oxidative stress plays a key role in the respiratory challenge of horses, and therefore it is recommended to provide natural antioxidants in the diet to remove these toxins.
- Herbs and natural extracts that guarantee highly specific support. Echinacea is probably the best-known and most-researched natural approach to boosting the immune system. Another, like liquorice, works by relieving inflammation of the linings of the airways.
- Bioavailable sulfur: MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is an essential nutrient indicated to strengthen airway tissue that can become weak during respiratory problems.
- A product that acts quickly and does not give doping so that the horse can continue competing.
