Strangvac: the vaccine for equine strangles

Friday 10 July 2026
Although often underestimated, equine strangles can have a significant impact on a horse's health and daily operations.

Dechra has launched STRANGVAC on the Spanish market, a vaccine for immunization against equine strangles.

STRANGVAC 8ds

The vaccine is intended for use in horses aged 8 months and older (safe from 5 months of age) that have been clearly identified as being at high risk of Streptococcus equi infection in areas where the pathogen is known to be present.

Strangvac is capable of:

  • Providing a broad and effective immune response.
  • Reducing clinical symptoms of strangles.
  • Reducing the number of lymph node abscesses.
  • Protecting against all known variants of S. equi.
  • When combined with standard biosecurity measures, it helps reduce the persistence of strangles through active immunization of horses.

Vaccine characteristics:

  • Intramuscular vaccine using fused recombinant proteins
  • DIVA capability (Differentiation between Infected and Vaccinated Animals)
  • Non-live vaccine
  • 94% efficacy in vaccinated horses
  • Reduces symptoms of strangles (cough, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing, behavioral changes, and lymph node abscesses)

Vaccination schedule:

  • V1: from 8 months of age
  • V2: 1 month after the first dose
  • Annual booster dose / every 6 months in high-risk areas
  • Onset of immunity: 2 weeks after the 2nd dose
