Description

PHARMACEUTICAL FORM
Injectable solution.

SPECIES
Cattle (≥ 200kg) and horses.

Indications

Sedative with analgesic action and muscle relaxant.
In all the species, it is indicated to produce a state of sedation accompanied by a short period of analgesia.

It is therefore indicated in:
  • Sedation and animal handling.
  • Diagnostic procedures.
  • Short-term surgical procedures.
  • Long surgical procedures.
*as a preanesthetic to obtain a local anesthesia.
*as a preanesthetic to obtain general anesthesia.

Dose / Application / Administration

HORSES:
Route of administration:
Intravenous.
Dosage:
The dosage ranges between 0.6 – 1mg/kg b.w. (equivalent to 0.3 – 0.5ml/100kg b.w.).
The dosage depends on the degree of sedation to be obtained and the response of each animal. Nervous horses require higher doses.
If the desired degree of sedation is not achieved, repeating the dose is unlikely to be effective. It is better to let the animal recover and administer higher doses after 24 hours.

Although laboratory studies in rats have not shown teratogenic or fetotoxic effects, the product is only used during the first two trimesters of pregnancy, and after a careful evaluation of the benefit-risk relationship by the veterinarian. Do not administer at the end of pregnancy (especially in cattle), except at the time of delivery since xylazine causes uterine contractions and may cause abortion or premature birth.
Do not use in cattle receiving egg transplants, since increased uterine tone may reduce the possibility of implantation.

The analgesic effect is variable, especially in the distal part of the extremities.
Despite the sedation, care must be taken when handling the horse because its defense reactions do not decrease.
